“Did you know that people who write down a few positive things about their day report feeling happier, less anxious and more optimistic?” This question, a blue ribbon, and virtual confetti greet you the first time you share a Happy on happier. My first Happy was a picture of donuts that made my kids very happy Saturday. After posting the picture I was asked to categorize it. Being that it was food, I chose “eating awesome food.” Friends on happier can now see the things I post each day that make me happy, such as a photo or a text posting. The great thing is it can be about anything that makes me happy. Read on, it isn’t as narcissistic as I just made it sound…quite the opposite in fact.
While seeing the posts of friends can help me appreciate the things for which they are happy, the real value of this app comes from giving thanks for what makes you happy. The simple act of posting makes the difference. I chose the setting for happier to remind me three times a day to post something that makes me happy. I am putting the happiness theory to the test.
Give happier a try with your kids as a way to test drive social media, teach responsibility and express gratitude. Tell them that you will all post at least one thing per day, before dinner that makes you happy. During dinner use this as topic for discussion. If my family is sharing stories from the day about those things that made them happy…guess what, it makes me happier.
Currently happier is only available for iPhone. If you want to read a great book about happiness, check out The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin.
